What is Hypnotherapy and how does it work?

Hypnotherapy is a type of therapy that utilizes hypnosis, which is a term that comes from the Greek word hypnos, meaning “sleep.” Hypnosis is essentially a process for focussing consciousness and going into a deep state of absorption, also called a trance. It’s a natural state of consciousness that you may have been aware of experiencing before. For example, many people have reported being surprised that they were automatically driving to work on Saturday morning instead of going shopping. With hypnosis you can go to deeper levels of consciousness, and in this deeply focused state it’s possible to educate the subconscious with helpful, healing suggestions. This is accomplished by the hypnotherapist utilizing a particular hypnotic script, written by experts in the field. It’s important to note that all hypnosis is essentially self-hypnosis, so the client is in control. A hypnotherapist can’t control a client’s mind. Hypnosis is a skill that anyone can learn. Like other skill training, the more you do it the more successful you will become.

What can I expect?

After the initial thirty-minute consultation, you can usually expect the next session to include a more thorough assessment of the issue you are struggling with, and the hypnotic assessment procedure. The general assessment includes many specific questions, and goal planning. The hypnotic assessment procedure helps to determine how hypnotizable you are, and it’s also a good introduction to hypnosis.  All the assessment information is important in providing you with an individualized, effective treatment plan. The plan may offer hypnotherapy as a stand-alone treatment or be combined with other highly effective counselling and therapy approaches to be maximally effective. A number of hypnotherapy sessions is usually required to effectively treat a condition. To help boost the in-person sessions an audio recording is made using your mobile device, or one can be made for you. Some clients bring their partner or friend to help provide emotional support. The vast majority of clients work on their plan and successfully achieve their goals.
